the album has been out for a short while I finally had the chance to rock out to the latest release from The Steepwater Band, and I got pretty much what I expected, unpretentious rockin and something I could tap my toes to if I was so inclined. The new album Grace & Melody I believe is the sixth release from the Chicago based band. My personal favorite off the 11 track album is All the Way to Nowhere, which reminds me a little of my all time favorite SWB band track House is Burnin off of their first album Goin Back Home....

Enough reminiscin' about watchin these guys rock out at Kenwood Tap in Hammond back in the day. SWB has got a great new album and it's time for me to get with the times and rock out. Check out The Steepwater Bands music new and old and see when their comin to your local haunt at www.steepwater.com and since I haven't found a video for the new album yet, rock out to one from their previous album Revelation Sunday.

pauleypub

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fromthegolocalmusic.blogspot.com/2009/02/steepwater-band-bringin-grace-and.html' title='Steepwater Band bringin' Some Great Recomends

i got outta work on time today, only to find out that the remnants of a hurricane had washed out the cubs game in atlanta completely until the following day. i'm a huge fan of dbl headers, but c'mon...i finally got outta work at a decent hour. wtf.

anyways, that left me w/ time to contemplate my next love/obsession...music...and how to go bout seeing the wonderful sounds that come out my speakers w/o the help of some illicit substance (altho it certainly doesn't hurt)...that being the witness of my favorite music acts live. soo, here's a list of upcoming shows to some up and coming bands that have come up thru the ranks of coolness according to me for you to come up and slooshy for yourself.

the airborne toxic event
discovered this band on accident looking for something else on the ole ituner. they're from l.a. debut album dropped this week. it's cool. think inxs meets the smiths meets u2 meets the cure, but w/ a viola, hyperliteralism, and a bit more modern feel. singer croons, bassplayer uses a bow at times, viola gal switches to keys, drummer stomps 80s romp, and the guitars harken back to early u2 udge and then sound like something outta the clash. and they dress nice.

where to hear:
-official video for "does this mean you're moving on": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch1deS_6J18
-wait for it..wait for it.."sometime around midnight" on conan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR098LK4qBQ
-acoustic version of my fav song "happiness is overrated" (looks like they're playing my dad's basement..w/ more ceiling room): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXnzle6DCRk

okkervil river
thanks to lolla for allowing me to "discover" this band. that and some dude's t-shirt w/ nice artwork that seemed kinda creepy but prolly got him chicks at the same time (and wondered if that would help me any). another baritoney singer that's high on literalism, symbolism, and pornstars. yup, that's right. last year's release, "the stage names", contained at least one song dealing w/ the life (and death) of one shannon wilsey, aka "savannah", aka "the girl who played alice in wonderland in tom petty & the heartbreaker's 'don't come around here no more' video". remember her? she dated rock stars like slash, billy idol, vince neil (gregg allman knocked her up at age 16)..then ended up w/ pauley shore? after dating pauley shore, she and a friend left a party early one morning in 1994, high on who knows what, and she proceeded to ram her corvette into a fence. she suffered numerous lacerations and a broken nose. they immediately went home instead of contacting authorities, where she ordered her friend to let the dog out. then she called her agent begging her to come out and help. she probably looked in the mirror, saw she was disfigured, and then shot herself in the face to finish the pain in her life. her family blamed her porn star friends. her porn star ppl blamed a shoddy family upbringing. was it b/c she could no longer be "savannah"? or was it b/c she realized she was no longer "shannon wilsey"? maybe it was being reduced to tuggin on pauley shore's weasel. anyways, the song "savannah smiles" deals w/ what either a close friend or perhaps maybe her father must be feel when reflecting on the past. it's actually quite touching, an emotionally strong song, like much of the rest of the album. a masterpiece in my mind. another song worth mentioning is "john allyn smith sails", which deals w/ the suicide of poet John Berryman, who jumped off the washington street bridge in 1972, and presents a point of view for the right to die when in pain. it's merely a point of view though, and the outro which is a re-working of a traditional west indies folk song (made popular by the beach boys as "sloop john b") likens the ordeal to "coming back home". as you may imagine, the lyrics are great, and shapes the 9 songs into a concept album dealing w/ symbolism of pop and art culture and the effects it has on our lives. the music delivers the emotion of the lyricism well, and best of all, the sequel of the album comes out next month! oh yeah..they too, are sharp dressers.

where to hear:
-official video for "our life is not a movie or maybe": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROlCPlnCIfo
-"unless it kicks" at sxsw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgAd4UoCV3M
-acoustic version of "savannah smiles": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8VjGXY4C-Y

where to see:
tuesday, october 14th at the metro. tix are like $20. hey, everything's a twenny! go to metrochicago.com for tix. bonus, you'll get to see black joe louis & the honey bears. they're entertaining!

the dodos
acoustic percussion psychedelic folk music. but not any appfm. this is what happens when you grow up w/ your parents listening to both vashti bunyan and led zeppelin and then you later discover mushrooms while pal-ing around w/ a drummer whose background is in progressive metal. the dodos are not for everyone. they are certainly not for those coffeehouses you gathered in throughout high school b/c you couldn't get into a bar to talk about books and movies and to viddy the young devotchkas in their revealing fashions while you hypered about high on coffee, cigarettes, and if you were cool..a jibber and a jobber in the pking lot. no, these guys kick..and definitely jibbered and got jobbered while you were sipping iced cappucinos. they're energetic, vigorous in spirit, and flat out jam. the guitarist navigates the acoustic fretboard alternating between fingerpicking and rapid fire strumming and the drummer..complete w/ tambourines on his shoes..provides a tribal beatdown while a newly added keyboardist/xylophonist adds delicate touches of shear madness here and there. if metal went acoustic and married folk, it might sound like the dodos. get the new album "visiter", out on digital release and in stores.

where to hear:
-official video for "the fools": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhLRxui7vXU
-dark footage of "trades and tariffs": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYE47xWtkOU
-"red and purple" from npr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuXbHQko3_Q
It is by far worth the 65 bucks I spent for a 3 day ticket and even though I wasn't real familiar with a lot of the bands, a good time was had by Mr. Pauley Pub (side note tho, I had to go to Rock Tha Bells on Sat to see Pharcyde and Tribe Called Quest reunited, I'm not fucking stupid).

For those of you who don't know about Pitchfork, remember those pasty white guys in your high school? Yep, there all here, but now they're cool because they wear shorts from the late 80s and old school Ray Ban sunglasses(another side note, they're still kinda socially inept because they can't say excuse me if they bump into you ((not once the two days I was there)) Of course that was not the whole population, a cool laidback crowd , except for the 6ft5 douche who got mad when Vic Vegas and I crept in front of him to get closer to Public Enemy. Music, top notch (you'll hear more from Vic Vegas) excellent food and beer vendors and prices and a great venue. A big thumbs up to the Pitchfork organizers and I will see you next year.

You can check out some of the bands by going to http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com

Stay tuned for reviews from Vic Vegas.

Till then,
Pauley Pub

The Definition of Hip Hop in Chicago

There's two things that happen in Chicago in the spring.

One. People just start getting stupid man. It's not in a bad way, but after 6 months of cold weather, shoveling out cars, and worrying about gas bills, the sun comes out. Whether you're walking on Michigan Ave, sittin on a stoop, BBQin with your cousins and aunties, there's this same citywide expression. Dumb joy. Hooray for dumb joy smiling mutherfuckers.

Two. From the kids ridin in their daddies car in Naperville, to the cats runnin around 5th ave in Gary, to those two cuties in the green bathingsuits on North Beach (what's up) hip hop is coming out their pores ya'll. I know you can feel it too, Chitown beats in the air.

It's with this in mind that you should prepare yourself for the summer ahead with some clips from Chicago's most ambitious video and film maker, Konee Rok. I was fortunate enough to correspond with him and air some of his videos when golocalmusic was in television form and came across one of his first projects from years back. It kinda made me remember why Chicago hip hop is unique to the country and kind of resonates with hip hop fans on a deeper level. Cut and paste the address below. For those who don't know, put down that Zima you sippin on, turn off the Anchorman DVD you've watched 10 times already, and get knowin.

Though Dennehy is by far Serengti's most popular song (and for good reason, it should be the Chicago song of the summer every year, dammit) the link below will lead you to the first video of his I saw on youtube.

Then go listen to Dennehy, but with caution (DONT WATCH THE VIDEO FOR DENNEHY UNTIL YOU'VE LISTENED TO THE SONG), utilize his perfect imagery and let your imagination run wild . "I Don't Know" led me to believe he was good, "dennehy" led me to believe he was too fucking good. From the Go correspondent Vic Vegas will have more on Geti's new releases and such. Cheers.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=JRHqbTAcnuk

Pauley

Go Local Music in blog form?

Yeah that's right muthas.
